Rodent Ulcer Cat Lip

Rodent ulcer which also goes by many clinical names including eosinophilic granulomas is a complex highly unpleasant skin condition that my poor cat murphy developed.

The disease presents itself as a hard lesion that appears on the inside of a cat s lip. The cat rodent ulcer has been called by several names. An ulcer may recur if the cat has had them before. The upper lip area is the most common place for sores to develop.

A rodent ulcer starts as a pinkish spot usually around the cat s mouth and develops into an open sore. Inspect your cat s mouth if you see sores appearing on the upper lip there will be a loss of tissue with the area appearing red or orange yellow. They most commonly present on the upper lip but can also occur on the bottom lip tongue or behind a molar. A rodent ulcer is a common form of feline eosinophilic granuloma complex.

Indolent ulcers occur on the upper lip of cats at almost any age. Her hair coat had regrown completely and her lip although scarred had regenerated fairly well. While it looks painful the ulcer seems to pose no discomfort to an infected cat. At six month follow up the cat had gained a total of 3 pounds.

They seem to cause no pain. The cat will often not give any notice to the presence of a rodent ulcer. The sores may be covered in scabs or they may bleed and give off a foul odor.
